March 25 - It Happened One Night
Claudette Colbert and Clark Gable star in one of the first and finest romantic road comedies that’s been imitated many times but never duplicated, and is still as fresh and funny 90 years later! Directed by Frank Capra and winner of Best Picture. 1934. 105min.
April 15 - On the Waterfront
Our pick for Holy Week – a would-be boxer who “could’ve been a contender” goes up against the corrupt union boss of New York’s docks in a very Christian story about facing persecution and confronting evil. With Marlon Brando, Eve Marie Saint and Karl Malden, directed by Elia Kazan. Best Picture Winner. 1954. 108 min.
April 29 – The Maltese Falcon
Humphrey Bogart’s most famous role as detective Sam Spade – in a murder mystery about evil and greed as three thieves stop at nothing to find a missing infamous Maltese falcon statuette. Costarring Mary Astor, Peter Lorre and Sydney Greenstreet. 1941. 100min.
May 13 - The Searchers
One of the big screen’s best westerns, John Ford’s beautifully photographed story about family bonds and racism, as John Wayne relentlessly searches for years for his kidnapped niece - with Natalie Wood, Jeffrey Hunter and Vera Miles. 1956. 119min.
May 20 – Theodora Goes Wild
Another forgotten comedy gem from the golden age: a wild screwball farce about a meek woman (Irene Dunne) from the small town of Lynnfield who lives a double life as a steamy romance novelist and what happens when her secret is brought out into the open. 1936. 94 min.
June 10 – The Manchurian Candidate
Tense and scary American political thriller about the evils of the Cold War, the media and mind control, starring Frank Sinatra, Laurence Harvey, Janet Leigh and an Oscar-nominated villianous performance by Angela Lansbury; directed by John Frankenheimer. 1962. 126min.
June 17 – Radio Days
A hilarious and nostalgic look back at a time when people listened to the radio; covering its radio stars, stories, sport heroes, gangsters, big band music and the culture it impacted as we follow a working-class Jewish family at the start of the Second World War. An underrated, wistful comedy that is an absolute must! Starring Mia Farrow, Julie Kavner and Dianne Wiest, written and directed by Woody Allen. 1987. (Rated PG) 88 min
