______________________________________________________________________________
September 16 – GOING MY WAY (1944) – One of the most favorite Catholic movies of all time (and its sequel The Bells of St. Mary’s) about Father O’Malley (Bing Crosby) taking over St. Dominic’s parish from an older, cantankerous pastor (played to the hilt by Barry Fitzgerald). A happy film directed by Leo McCarey and winner of SEVEN Academy Awards including Best Picture, Actor, and Song: “Swingin’ on a Star”.
September 30 – PAT AND MIKE (1952) Kathrine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy star in a funny sports comedy about a determined athlete, her difficult fiancee and her shady (but lovable) sports agent in this charming film directed by George Cukor; with Aldo Ray and Chuck Connors.
October 14 – SUNSET BOULEVARD (1950) – Silent film star Norma Desmond (Gloria Swanson) falls in love with a down-on-his-luck screenwriter (William Holden) with tragic results in Billy Wilder’s biting satire of Hollywood in the fifties.
October 28 – NOTORIOUS (1946) – Romantic suspense classic starring Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman as US agents trying to uncover a Nazi espionage ring in one of Alfred Hitchcock’s best and most suspenseful films that’s not to be missed!
November 11 – HAIL THE CONQUERING HERO (1944) – Preston Struges’ great screwball comedy about false hero worship and small town politics when a discharged marine (Eddie Bracken) is mistaken as a war hero in his hometown at the end of WWII. With William Demarest and Ella Raines.
November 25 – MRS. MINIVER (1942) – Greer Garson stars in this award winning drama from WWII about a middle class British family in the days leading up to the war. With Walter Pigeon and Teresa Wright. Winner of six Academy Awards including Best Picture, Actress and Director William Wyler.
December 9 – THE PAJAMA GAME (1957) – Doris Day stars in one of the most ebullient screen musicals ever made about labor troubles and romance in an Iowa pajama factory - with John Raitt and Carol Haney and energetically directed by Stanley Donen (Singin’ in the Rain).
December 16 – THE SHOP AROUND THE CORNER (1940) – Warm and witty Christmas classic about a pair of bickering shop clerks who don’t know they are really pen-pal sweethearts. (The remake of this original is You’ve Got Mail.) Directed by legendary filmmaker Ernst Lubitsch starring a young James Stewart, Margaret Sullavan and Frank Morgan.
